Sung Hung Kai Properties (SHK)

Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHK) is the largest property developer in Hong Kong as of 2019. I developed an MVP of a blockchain-based Electronic Contract Procurement System (ECPS), digitalized, and revamped parts of the paper-based process to improve usability, convenience, and security.

Problems

1. Manual and time-consuming processes

2. Lack of transparency and visibility

3. Limited accessibility and collaboration

4. Data management challenges

5. Higher costs and environmental impact

6. Increased risk of errors and compliance issues

Research

Underlying Technology

Blockchain maintains a decentralized and secure record of documents. Therefore, blockchain can guarantee the fidelity and security of data records and generate the need for a third party.

Market Research

Explored and discovered different types of e-tendering process and collected good and bad examples for design development.

Solutions

1. Tender Details Dashboard

Objectives
  • Identify opportunities and trends in the market

  • Benchmark best design practices

  • Know competitor’s strengths and weaknesses.

UX Principle: Flexibility of system status

My Focus

Information Architecture, Storytelling & Copywriting, Communities, Facilities & Visit, and Lead Generation.

Progress bar

I experimented using the progress bar as a visual cue. But I found that it was not obvious and not enough entry points for users to move to the next step.

Final Solution

In the final design, the progress step was the better solution to include a brief description and a CTA button for them to initiate or continue the process.

2. Tender List Approval

UX Principle: Flexibility and efficiency of use

Problem

In the old process, the tenderer list is paper-based and lengthy. The key stakeholders usually make notes on the paper. But the paper is difficult to store and could easily be lost.

3. Tender Recommendation Documents

UX Principle: Recognition rather than recall

Problem

Tendering process usually has many documents that has to be uploaded by multiple stakeholders. The SHK team found it difficult to keep track what has been uploaded by who and to check whether anything is missing.

4. Central Tender Board Signing

Problem

In the old process, The Central Tender Board (6 members) would have a meeting to vote tenders by signing their signatures and write remarks on a large piece of paper. However, it is inefficient and not secure.

UX Principle: Responsive

Solution

Collaboratively, our goal was to digitalize and simplify the process by reducing the number of steps, automation, convenient access, visible system status, and displaying relevant information.

Design Impact

Established design excellence

As the only product designer in the team, I made note of the importance of good UX/UI and visual style. Although we were working on a tight timeline, I tried my best to set a standard for all design outputs.

Improved usability

Through spending time understanding client’s needs and their objectives, and discernment in applying usability techniques / approaches, the digitalized designs have profoundly improved the usability for the SHK team.

Established design excellence

I created a design system to standardize all visual outputs and a created more efficient and time-saving way to prototype. The product team was able to make references to the guidelines and build on the designs.
